One little word that will kick start your year...

Here we are, two weeks into a new year.

A fortnight ago, no doubt you woke up bright eyed, full of big dreams for your business in 2015. This would be your year, the year you do things differently. But then, Monday morning hit…

The emails, the old routine, the lack of festive cheer that buoys us all through December – it can chip away at those big dreams. But I’m here to tell you that they don’t have to – oh no! This can be the year you do things you’ve always wanted. There’s just one thing you have to do first. One little word – are you ready?

Sounds simple doesn’t it? But it can be deceptively tricky. We write our to-do lists, talk the big talk and think about how much better our lives will be once we achieve this ‘Big Thing’. Very few of us actually sit ourselves down and work out what we need to do to get started.

You may be wondering at this point why I’m writing this half way through January instead of at the beginning. Well, the very fact you’re reading this means you’ve already mentally committed to doing this ‘Big Thing’. You don’t want to be one of those people who breaks their resolution before January is out. The quitters have already made and broken their promises, but not you – you’re in it for the long haul! Awesome!

So let’s get started!

Without further ado, here are my 5 big tips for making the ‘Big Thing’ achievable for 2015:

• Choose your ‘Big Thing’

Is this the year you get your website just right? Start that e-newsletter you’ve been talking about for months? Is it time for a rebrand? Write it down! It’s surprising how much weight something carries when it’s written in ink.

• Break it down

‘Rebrand my business’ can sound like an awfully daunting task written like that, can’t it? Instead of just writing down huge to-do items, try breaking them down into more do-able steps. By splitting it up into bitesize chunks, you’ll feel so much clearer and most likely less stressed out!

• Give yourself time

I’m as guilty of this as the next person. We get so tied up in tending to our clients’ and customers’ every need that we forget to better ourselves and our businesses. Tend your own garden. Set some time aside to plant some seeds otherwise you’ll never see anything grow!

• Make a (realistic) timescale – and set a deadline!

It’s all to easy to say that you’re going to this ‘Big Thing’ some time this year. I’m here to tell you that that’s a surefire way get precisely nothing done at all. Without a definite deadline, your ‘Big Thing’ will get lost under a pile of ‘super important’ papers or pushed to the back of your mind when busy season comes. Instead, get a calendar and plan in a timescale – with waypoints for your mini targets. Once your course is set, every day you’re that little bit closer to your target.

• Get started!

Pick something off your list and do it – today! Yes, I said today. It can be something small, a brainstorm, an email – anything. That first little step means you’ve started and you’ll be surprised how much momentum you’ll gain in no time at all!

How are you going to get this thing started?
